Introduction
Architecture + Tectonics, the process of turning drawings and visions into practice.
This exhibition, themed "Non-Parallel:[ 無 ] 平行" aims to present architectural works completed between 2022 and 2024, following the end of pandemic restrictions. By showcasing these works, we will unveil the interactive state of the multiverse among different architectural entities—architects, construction industries, and clients. The exhibition will outline an architectural world that appears parallel yet intricately interconnected, reflecting not only Taiwan's current reality but also serving as a microcosm of Taiwanese society.
The 19 selected works in this exhibition each reflect various issues faced by contemporary society. Viewers will see different perspectives and positions of architects, construction industries, and clients in addressing these issues, as well as the attitudes and responses manifested in the final built spaces. The exhibition actively presents a vision for the future, providing viewers with a fresh perspective to gain a deeper understanding of the multifaceted meanings of architecture and the potential for future development.
non-parallel: [ 無 ] 平行: Emphasizing the multiple dimensions in the architectural construction process.
Both architecture and life are woven from a tapestry of choices. The journey of architecture, from conception to completion, unfolds like a boundless multiverse. Within this realm, architects, clients, contractors, and other contributors dance together in a symphony of interwoven roles, crafting an intricate web of interaction across parallel worlds.
From the emergence of needs, through every stage of design and construction, architectural works face various constraints and challenges of the real environment. Each participant undergoes countless struggles and compromises. However, the final presentation of the work is merely one of the many possible outcomes after careful consideration. If we lay out the various decision factors in the design process, architectural works will no longer be singular but will become a complex, ever-growing network. This network includes various diverging, converging, and parallel sequences, presenting richer and more diverse possibilities. These possibilities not only represent the decision-making process within specific spatial and temporal contexts but also reflect the meaning and complexity of contemporary society, providing us with a glimpse into understanding modern architecture and social changes.
2024 Tectonic Becoming Exhibition will continue its focus on the dialogue between design, structure, and tectonic. The exhibition will showcase the results of communication, compromise, and persistence among designers and construction teams throughout the process from design concepts to the completion of buildings, through various perspectives. By depicting these intertwined networks of choices and possibilities, the audience will be guided into the multiverse behind architecture, understanding that the journey from design to realization is not a straightforward linear causation but rather a synthesis of social realities and future imaginations within different temporal and spatial contexts, thereby appreciating the complexity and diversity of architectural and construction processes.
This year, 2024 Tectonic Becoming Exhibition will be held at the Tainan Art Museum in conjunction with the 2024 Taiwan Design Expo in Tainan and Tainan 400 event. It aims to bridge the architecture of Taiwan’s new era with the ancient and modern aspects of Tainan. The city itself is a grand exhibition, with each building a fragment of its cultural mirror. A review of the architectural issues explored in Tainan, from urban planning to building scale, includes topics such as the revitalization of historic buildings, rethinking site boundaries, new applications of traditional materials, and discussions on building facades. These discussions not only highlight Tainan's unique urban characteristics but also reflect the overall development of architectural trends in Taiwan. They embody contemporary architectural discourses and form the core themes of this curation.
By visiting the 2024 Tectonic Becoming Exhibition, visitors will engage with Taiwan's architectural innovation in the new era and juxtapose it with the fusion of history and modernity experienced in Tainan. This "exhibition within an exhibition" format reveals diverse possibilities for architectural innovation and urban future thinking within Taiwan's rich historical tapestry.
2024 Tectonic Becoming Exhibition has specially invited the Bordeaux Architecture Center from France to curate the parallel exhibition titled “[樹] 建築 Arboretum: trees as architecture." This exhibition explores the metaphor and practical application of trees as architecture, offering profound reflections on the intersection of natural intelligence and architectural design.
