This exhibition originates from a cross-national research project initiated in 2019:This exhibition originates from a cross-national research project initiated in 2019: “Sea-centric Forms of Socially Engaged Art: Critical Re-Imagination of InterculturalFlow in the Kuroshio Current.”Through research, curation, and socially engagedcreative practice, the project seeks to evoke reflection on the interconnectedness ofisland communities, the Kuroshio cultural sphere, and multispecies relationships—ultimately transforming these insights into a call for environmental stewardship of ouroceans and islands.
The exhibition is structured into three thematic sections: “Multispecies Dialogues,”“Sea-Centric Socially Engaged Art Practices in Asia,” and “Flow as Method:Transcultural Sea Narratives.” It also presents participatory public art projectsdeveloped since 2019, integrating stories and imagery co-created by transculturalisland communities. We invite audiences to envision new frameworks forcoexistence, migration, and marine environmental ethics between humans and nonhumanspecies, while re-examining the messages carried by the Kuroshio current, thewinds, and the sea.
When we adopt the sea as our center of inquiry, we perceive its borderless nature—arealization that individuals are never truly isolated, but intimately connected to othercommunities and species. Amidst the environmental crises wrought by urbanizationand industrialization, this exhibition situates these urgent issues within the sharedcontext of Asian and Kuroshio communities. We invite you to imagine us all asfellow passengers on a drifting vessel—where shall we sail next?
Through exhibition and community collaboration, we share stories of the sea andinvite you to embark on an “island-hopping” journey. We hope you will join us in thisongoing dialogue, participating in an artistic movement that adopts “flow” as itsmethodology.
