Unfolding Circuits: 1st Tainan Art Biennale 2026
Seven Sections, Seven Paths, Seven Curators, Seven Sub-themes
Diversity in curation, global-local dialogue“Unfolding Circuits,” the theme of the inaugural Tainan Art Biennial, echoes the seven historic roads radiating from the roundabout at Tainan's Tang Te-chang Memorial Park. For this exhibition, seven curators—Apex Lin, Pang-soong, Sotetsu Sha, Kao Jun-honn, Yang Chia-hsuan, Ko Chun-ju, Chuang Tong-chiao, and Ko Yi-yun—have been invited to elaborate on this theme, and have developed seven distinct sub-themes: the "Vanished Circuit," "Environment Circuit," "Historical Circuit," "Gathering Circuit," "Rebirth Circuit," "Landscape Circuit," and "Mobility Circuit."
Circuits are usually defined as circular loops. What if we were to unfold and expand a loop, like the roads going in different directions from a traffic roundabout? What if the loop was an iteration, and with every spin something shifted? This section features highlights from the accounts of the seven curators for the upcoming Tainan Art Biennial, who rely on different vantage points to weave a complex map of Tainan's past, present, and future.
These seven accounts offer seven ways of seeing the city and seven exercises in getting in touch with the authentic Tainan within each circuit.Date│2026.10.31 - 2027.3.1

The Vanished Art Design of Taiwan
In the development of modern Taiwanese art from 1895 through the 1960s, pioneering local artists concurrently practiced the philosophy of "fine arts as the core, design as the application." During that period, prominent artists from metropolitan Japan actively engaged in designing Taiwanese posters, postcards, book bindings, and illustrations. Furthermore, throughout the colonial era, numerous Japanese artists who had never set foot on the island nonetheless adopted Taiwan as a central motif in their designs. By unearthing these narratives, this sub-theme directly confronts the systemic marginalization of "artistic design" within Taiwanese art history, and strives to bridge this critical historiographical void and reconstruct a missing discourse.【 Theme 2 】Environment Circuit / Sotetsu Sha
Exploring Myths and Gospels within the Bounds of Environments
From a morphological perspective, Tainan is a spatial realm woven from "loops" (the vanished city walls, the organic circuits of alleyways, and the roundabouts) and "Precincts" (residential neighborhoods, urban blocks, and ritual boundaries). Visitors often find themselves "getting lost" as a necessary means of entering into the hidden domain of "Inner Tainan," where they can immerse themselves in the raw texture of the city's everyday life. Tainan's inherent character ensures that the city's historic core is a sanctuary tailored for walking, drifting, and spontaneous pauses.【 Theme 3 】Historical Circuit / Kao Jun-honn
Artistic Re-enactment, Bridging history with the Contemporary
Centering on the Tapani Incident during the early period of Japanese colonial rule, this project utilizes environmental theater, object installations, sound art, publications, and educational workshops to critically "re-enact" and bridge history with the contemporary. It aims to foster art and historical education while provoking reflection on the future. Moving across landscapes from mountains and cities to the ocean, the project reconsiders the agency of marginalized subjects, and further explores the intricate connections between weak governance, contemporary life, and biopolitics.【 Theme 4 】Gathering Circuit / Yang Chia-hsuan
Collective Assemblage of the People - Publicness and Site
A space forms its fluid trajectories through the human encounters within it. It is never merely an abstract, neutral container, but a living field that bears and accumulates relationships. Departing from the concept of "assembly," this sub-theme explores collective mobilization within the art ecosystem. Ultimately, where there is gathering, there is dispersal. What remains after the departure are accumulated memories and traces—the starting point where a new set of trajectories will once again intertwine.【 Theme 5 】Regenerative Circuit / Ko Chun-ju
The Eternal Myth of Reincarnation in Tainan City
The past and current lives of roundabouts and museums constantly reincarnate, generating fresh meanings. Whether architectural structures or urban systems, both seem to have entered a state akin to material cycling. When the lifecycle of matter is no longer perceived as a linear trajectory with a definite beginning and end, but rather as an ongoing, continuous loop—of creation, utilization, reclamation, remanufacturing, and reuse—this perpetual cycling forms a powerful metaphorical link with the wheel of samsara. Here, at this specific temporal junction, can artistic intervention summon a unique, eternal state of "the now"?【 Theme 6 】Landscape Circuit / Chuang Tong-chiao
Shaping Local CulturalLandscapes
This sub-theme focuses on the contemporary translation of religious art and folk crafts, alongside bodily perception within landscapes, and explores how artists transform divine iconography and temple craftsmanship. Through active engagement with rituals and public spaces, these practices reframe the landscape as a human-constructed domain, thereby centering our attention on the body, materiality, and inner contemplation. The exhibited works respond directly to Tainan's cultural identity and its encircling urban landscapes, manifesting the multi-layered meanings of cyclicity, mobility, and perception.【 Theme 7 】Mobility Circuit / Ko Yi-yun
Urban Ripples
If roundabouts are the hubs that drive urban movement, the city itself operates like a massive engine, fueled by the kinetic energy of "mobility." Through cycles of commuting, pausing, and departing, individual trajectories gradually map themselves out. These recurrent paths weave isolated spaces together, constituting the very rhythm of the city—like ripples expanding outward, loop after loop. -
